Thanks again for the pic and the review! :)
I’ll definitely go there, when I’m in Melbourne next year! ;)
I’m so glad @lovingsylvia posted about The Bell Jar (cafe) a few days ago. I went to check it out on Sunday morning and I say, I love its vibe.
(And there you go, @lovingsylvia, this is what The Bell Jar looks like from the outside. :] )
I would definitely have missed it had I not used my GPS, because it’s so inconspicuously tucked away among shophouses that look either asleep or abandoned. In fact, it looks like it was the only setup on that street that was operational that morning. And apparently its neighbour is a brothel. How quaint.
I had some spicy corn cakes that was on their specials that morning; I wouldn’t consider them sensational, but the 1950s vibe of the place more than made up for it. The Bell Jar’s a great respite from the mad hustle and bustle of Melbourne’s city cafes. Had I not gone with my friends, I might have just spent the entire afternoon there with a few cuppa just reading / attempting to write. And I wouldn’t even dream of bringing my laptop there, not because of the absence of wifi, but a laptop will just look wrong in its 50s-scape and among its patronage of hippies and struggling artists (not surprising since it’s in the Brunswick area). I guess technology can wait if my purpose there is to escape the city’s madness — which is ironic, I know.
